Just like adoptions, fostering saves lives.
When you agree to foster an animal you provide temporary shelter and care to animals who are waiting to find a permanent forever home. Fostering is very much needed for various reasons.
Here are a few examples :
- Some animals do not cope well in shelter environments. They are scared and stressed and as a result could get physically sick or suffer from mental disorders.
- Many times sanctuaries are full and don’t have space for additional intakes. By fostering an animal you would be alleviating this pressure and making space for other abandoned animals to be rescued.
- In some cases, an animal’s behaviour cannot be assessed in a shelter environment. By fostering an animal with your family, you would be able to assess the animal’s true character and personality making it easier to find that animal their perfect match.
Fostering saves lives and it’s an incredibly noble act.
As an animal lover, you will undoubtedly bond with any animal you allow into your home so parting with it will be hard. Sometimes fosterers decided that they want to keep their fostered animals and that’s what we call a foster fail. However, by honouring the fostering process, and keeping in mind that it’s a good ‘goodbye’ you will be able to keep helping more animals.
Just like adoption, not everyone is cut out to be a foster parent. Here are a few guidelines to help you decide if fostering is for you:
- Do you have the time to take care of a new pet?
- Do you have the knowledge and experience to care for a pet that is likely to be traumatized and have some behavioural issues?
- Do you have the space for a new pet?
- Will your landlord allow it?
- Are you financially in a position to care for an animal?
